This spiced apple crumble is the perfect way to ease yourself into the cooler months. The apples are sweet and juicy, and the crumble is golden and buttery. There are warming spices throughout the whole dish. Your kitchen will also smell divine. It’s a wonderful way to use up older apples and tastes especially good at around 3pm in the afternoon.

This spiced apple crumble is so simple it’s going to change the way you think about desserts. Seriously. There’s really only three crucial components: Stir the apple component together, combine the crumble ingredients, and pour the crumble over the apples. It’s a beginner- and child-friendly recipe. I hope you enjoy!

A ceramic bowl of apple crumble topped with vanilla bean ice-cream and cinnamon sits on a glass dining room table. Beside it, is the baking tray with the remaining apple crumble. Cinnamon and oats decoratively placed around the bowl.

INGREDIENTS

Apples:

  • 8 apples, washed, cored and diced (skin on!) (I like a mix of green and red)

  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon

  • 1/4 teaspoon ginger

  • Juice of 1/4 lemon

  • 1/2 cup coconut sugar

Crumble:

  • 1 cup plain flour

  • 1/2 cup oats (use wheat-free if needed)

  • 1/2 cup coconut sugar

  • 1/2 cup vegan butter, softened and diced

  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon

  • 1/4 teaspoon ginger

  • Pinch of sea salt

  • Vanilla dairy-free ice-cream, to serve (I like Pana Organic)

METHOD

  1. Preheat the oven to 180° C. Place all of the apple ingredients into a large rectangular baking dish. Use a wooden spoon to mix the ingredients together until evenly combined.

    1 teaspoon cinnamon

    1/4 teaspoon ginger

    Juice of 1/4 lemon

    1/2 cup coconut sugar

  2. Place all of the crumble ingredients into a large mixing bowl. Combine the mixture by rubbing it together with your fingertips. Once fully combined, the texture should be crumbly but just able to hold its shape.

    1 cup plain flour

1/2 cup oats (use wheat-free if needed)

    1/2 cup coconut sugar

1/2 cup vegan butter, softened and diced

    1 teaspoon cinnamon

    1/4 teaspoon ginger

    Pinch of sea salt

  3. Pour the crumble over the top of the apples. Use the wooden spoon to gently even out the crumb. Place the baking dish in the oven and cook for 50 minutes, turning the baking dish around halfway through.

  4. Once the crumb is golden, remove the crumble from the oven and allow to cool for 15 minutes before serving with vanilla ice-cream. If you have any leftovers, allow to cool fully before storing in an air-tight container in the fridge for up to three days.
